Black Point

From Staniel Cay we make a short hop south to anchor one night at Black Point settlement. This small community is known among cruisers for its laundromat and Lorraine's Cafe.

As we walk down the main street, friendly towns people greet us. Men and women sit on their front porches and plait straw that will be made into baskets or sent to the Nassau straw market.

We've been told that Lorraine's mother makes the best coconut bread in the Exumas. We find her sitting in the doorway of a shed behind her daughter's restaurant. With a hatchet at her feet, she carves the white meat out of a coconut shell. We can only imagine how good her bread must be if she goes to this much trouble, so we place an order for two loaves.

That evening, we enjoy a home-cooked dinner at Lorraine's Cafe in the good company of Alan and Gerri on Civil Twilight. There's a cold front on the way that is predicted to bring squally weather. We agree not to ride this one out in the Exuma cays and plan our departure to Georgetown at first light the next day.

"The boaters call me 'Lorraine's mom,' but my name is Pam."
When she's not plaiting straw, she's making the best coconut

The local people are avid sailors. Deanna inspects a boat being built
for an upcoming regatta.
