Our destination on the second day of the New Year is Great
Guana Cay. There's just one potential obstacle: we must leave
the protected Sea of Abaco and go around Whale Cay on the
exposed Atlantic side. If the winds are strong out of the
north or east, a strong fetch called a "rage" will
make the route impassable. Fortunately, we have light winds
and the ocean is so smooth the boat's image is reflected on
the surface. Even in 50 feet of water, we can see the sandy
bottom. As a bonus, Nick catches a fish as we round the cay.
We arrive in Great Guana Cay with buddy boats Pegasus,
Irish Fever, and Royal Serf. Our Gulf Crossing
buddy Shian is already moored in the anchorage, and
soon Pelican arrives. Sounds like a reason to celebrate!
For two days we explore the small town and try to divide
our attention evenly between the main bars: Nippers and Grabbers.
They both serve signature drinks that taste suspiciously alike.
On our second night, Grabbers hosts a bountiful boaters' potluck.
The music includes old favorites from home and local songs
that quickly become our new favorites. Everyone dances and
surprisingly no one ends up in the pool.

Leaving the Sea of Abaco to pass Whale Cay
on the Atlantic side. We couldn't have asked for more placid
conditions.
