July 2005

Beating the Heat and Dodging Hurricanes

July arrived hot and steamy with a record seven tropical storms by mid-month. When Corpus appeared in the "cone of probability" for Emily, we spent a full day preparing the boat for tropical storm conditions. Luckily, Emily made landfall in Mexico and Corpus only had some high winds. So we spent the following weekend putting the boat back together. Not that we're complaining--it beats filing an insurance claim.

After Emily, the BYC enjoyed the hospitality of the Padre Island Yacht Club, whose members served up a great pot luck dinner. Those guys have the best sunset view in the coastal bend.

To close the month, we participated for the first time in the annual Navy Regatta. We sailed with the cruising fleet from Corpus to the naval airstation on the south side of the bay. Although unusually light winds on both days made for a slow trip, we enjoyed sailing on a tranquil bay for a change. On the return trip, Kiva decided to make the best of the situation by dropping sails and jumping overboard for a swim in the bay. They were having too much fun, so we drifted over and joined them. Later, the wind picked up and we flew our cruising chute for the downwind run to Corpus.

Many thanks to Jan on Kiva for the great shots of Caribbean Soul under sail.

Our regatta crew included two minesweeper captains and a recent naval academy graduate.

Brielle recently graduated from the naval academy with a swim scholarship.

Todd was recently given command of a minesweeper--and ear rubbing duties on Caribbean Soul.
