This is the month we decided to turn our lives upside down.
We committed to leave behind everything that makes life seem
familiar and comfortable--family, friends, jobs, and home--to
pursue the crazy notion of traveling on our boat to distant
islands.
With Nick's position at Cisco ending in February, we decided
it was now or never. We put Caribbean Soul in the boat
yard to resolve some nagging, unresolved issues. A month later
we had replaced the transmission, raw water pump, sea strainer,
and related plumbing. Thru-hulls were serviced, hoses and
clamps replaced, a new coat of paint applied to the bottom,
and numerous other items serviced. With cautious optimism,
we decided it would be possible to leave Texas in time to
be out of the hurricane zone by July 1st.
Getting the boat ready was only part of the challenge. We
had to do something with our apartment and all the belongings
that had stayed with us through two previous downsizings.
What we couldn't bear to part with we loaded in a Budget truck
and delivered around the state of Texas and stored with our
parents.
On the last day of March, Deanna said goodbye to her coworkers
and drove to Corpus Christi. The last tie with a normal life
was broken, and the future was now a blank page.
